A nomad's best friend While it isn't rare to see donkeys and horses in Afghanistan, the sight of camels is. However, for nomads like this Kuchi woman, the animal is the preferred method of transportation as the desert dwellers make their way across the country's rugged and arduous terrain. A one-hump dromedary, like the one pictured here, is able to carry heavy loads and go 5-7 days with little or no food or water. A working camel can easily survive on thorny scrub, bones, seeds, dried leaves, grass, dates and grains such as wheat and oats.
