Lemar TV / Al Jazeera License Clarification 12.04.2007 The Minister of Information and Culture, Abdul Karim Khuram, clarified the reasoning behind the suspension of the license for Lemar TV to rebroadcast Al Jazeera English. HE Khuram, the Minister of Information and Culture said: “the suspension order for the Moby Capital Group was purely because the license was awarded to broadcast Lemar TV, the company instead had decided to re-broadcast another channel. The Ministry’s role is very clear: to hold companies to account, for them to fulfill what they were award to do. As such, we issued a suspense order.” HE The Minister has privately written to Al Jazeera in Kabul, noting that Afghans are free to watch their channel through satellite and cable. The decision was just regarding Lemar TV not fulfilling the requirements within their license. Minister Khuram went on to say: “allegations that I or the Ministry is against any broadcaster or station because of personal reasons it totally false, I understand that some companies do not want to fulfill what they have promised to do: my job is to make sure that they do.” Commenting on the media law going through the National Assembly, the Minister said: “the Government, and I personally, will not allow political censorship, we welcome criticism. What we want to do, like many other countries in the west, is to create conditions where the values and culture of our people are not offended; and their lives and security is protected.” The decision to suspend the license for Lemar TV to re-broadcast Al Jazeera was taken by the Bar rassi ye Takhati ye rassana ha Commission (Review Commission for Media Violations of the Mass Media Law) on 12 Hut 1385. The regulations concerned were: Chapter Two Article Nine; Chapter Five Articles Twenty-One and Twenty-Two; and, Chapter Seven Article Thirty-Two, of the Mass Media Law (Official Gazette Issue No 871, 15 December 2006) << | >> |
