Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development builds a bridge in Balkh
24.01.2007 The Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MRRD) this week started building a bridge in Balkh province that will link four districts – benefiting thousands of people.

“The bridge will not only link the people of 4 districts in Balkh and Sar-e-Pul – namely the districts of Chimtal, Charbolak, Alburz and Sangcharak- it will also allow them to bring their agricultural produce to the markets of Balkh and other northern provinces,” said Abdul Baset Ainy, MRRD Director of Balkh.

The bridge will be 40 meter long and 5 meter wide and it will be completed by May. The work will be carried out by a private contractor that has been selected by the procurement department of the ministry. The bridge was designed according to international standard and braces up to 70 tones of load. The total cost of the bridge is $280,000 (10.8 million Afghani), which is being funded by Japan fund through UNDP and executed through MRRD’s National Area Based Development Programme (NABDP).

“This Bridge will help us to bring our produce to the markets. It will also link the people of Charbulak, Chimtal, Alburz and Sangcharak districts and thus they will be able to take their produce to the markets,” said a resident of Nowshad village, Mohammed Isa.

Through its various national programs such as the National Area Based Development Programme (NABDP), National Solidarity Programme (NSP), Microfinance Investment Facility for Afghanistan (MISFA), National Rural Access Programme (NRAP), Rural Water and Sanitation Programme (R-WATSAN) and Emergency Response Programme (ERP), MRRD has implemented thousands of development projects worth millions of USD throughout the country – creating employment opportunities and improved livelihood for the rural people of Afghanistan.
