Emergency Irrigation Rehabilitation Project in Jawzjan Province 24.01.2007 In January 2007, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Afghanistan inaugurated the implementation of an irrigation project called Safid Irrigation Scheme. The project is located in Gegedalik village (Had Bakhshi), center of Jawzjan province in the North region of Afghanistan. The main canal system of Jawzjan province comprises Safid and Khoja Doko main canals. The intake for these two canals is located in Gegedalik village on Jawzjan River with a diversion structure which diverts the water to the downstream irrigation network of these main canals. The intake was constructed with limited capacity and is gradually deteriorating by the uncontrolled floods. There are around 5636 beneficiary householders living in 9 major villages with approximately 44340 populations. The present irrigated land is around 6000 hectares; this command area will be increased to 6110 hectares when there are enough water supplies. The main cultivated crops are wheat, oil crops, miscellaneous garden crops, cumin, scrub brush, corn, melon, pea and bean, It is expected that after implementing the rehabilitation works there will be enough water to increase the yield and area. The ongoing rehabilitation work is improvement of the diversion cum intake structure, canal lining and construction of gabion bank protection. This medium category scheme is part of the World Bank funded project “Emergency Irrigation Rehabilitation Project” (EIRP) which includes co-financing from the Government of Afghanistan to be implemented in all the 34 provinces by the Ministry of Water and Energy. The project is technically support of FAO to be completed on September 30, 2008. The development objective of the project is to increase agricultural productivity and farm income, to improve food security and livelihoods and to reduce the vulnerability of farmers to droughts. << | >> |
