First Cooperative Dairy Union Established in Afghanistan
03.12.2006 The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Ministry of Agriculture held a ceremony on 30 November 2006 to mark the establishment of the first cooperative dairy union in Afghanistan which called Kabul Dairy Union. The ceremony was attended by H.E Obaidullah Ramin Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, other senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Serge Verniau FAO Representative in Afghanistan, FAO technical staff, and farmers/leaders of dairy cooperative societies who are members of the union and the media.

The Kabul Dairy Union which established by joint efforts of FAO, Ministry of Agriculture and dairy farmers, has seven cooperative societies with 416 members and has been registered yesterday under the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, under the department of Cooperatives. Similarly, dairy unions formation and registration is in process in Balkh (Mazar) and Kunduz.

During the ceremony certificates were distributed to 46 leaders of cooperative societies and dairy technical field staff who completed one-week training programme on "Organization and Management of Cooperatives Societies"¯. The purpose of the training programme was to build the capability of dairy cooperative society’s members on how to operate the business under the cooperative ownership. It is expected that by the end of this project, they would be trained and prepared to take over the processing facilities set up under FAO’s Trust Fund assistance. The project is funded by the German Government.

Soon, Guzargah dairy will be upgraded with modern milk processing facilities, to produce pasteurised milk in pouches, yoghurt, butter, ice-cream and other indigenous products. If, the plant operated in two shifts, it would be able to market 10,000 litres of pasteurized milk per day.
