Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University 18.09.2006 On Wednesday 20th September at Kabul University, the Afghan Minister of Higher Education, Dr Azam Dadfar, will inaugurate the Afghanistan Centre at Kabul University (ACKU), which will collect and share information on Afghanistan and facilitate research on the country. The opening ceremony at 2.00pm at the Central Library at Kabul University will be addressed by Dr Dadfar, by the acting Chancellor of Kabul University, Abdul Hai Nazifi, and by Nancy Dupree, who directs the ACKU. All the media are welcome to attend. Nancy Dupree founded what is now called the ACKU in 1989 in the Pakistani border town of Peshawar to collect and share information with the aid community that was at that time working with Afghan refugees in Pakistan and supporting projects within Afghanistan itself. Since its foundation, ACKU has collected 37,000 documents concerning all social, political and economic aspects on Afghanistan. All this archive has now been transferred to the Kabul University Library. New documents are collected every day. In recognition of what ACKU wants to offer, the Afghan Minister of Higher Education and the Chancellor of Kabul University have kindly allocated land on the university campus for the Afghanistan Centre building, which will be constructed to house the archive of documents, reading rooms, IT facilities and other amenities. Speaking ahead of the inauguration of ACKU at Kabul University, Nancy Dupree said “The Centre is located at the heart of Afghanistan’s main seat of learning because of all the support we have enjoyed from the Afghan Government and Kabul University. This makes me very happy.” << | >> |
