H5N1 Confirmed in Birds’ Samples
13.04.2006 Today 12 April 2006 the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Representation in Afghanistan received the testing result of 103 samples which were send to FAO reference laboratory in Padova, Italy on 6 April 2006, to determine the N subtype. Laboratory tests have not been entirely completed yet. Confirmation that the virus identified belongs to H5N1 subtype (Highly Pathogenic strain) has been obtained in samples collected from Kabul city and Logar province.

Test results from samples collected from Paktya and Kunar provinces were not confirmed as positive from the FAO reference laboratory.

Two samples collected from Parwan and Herat provinces respectively were tested positive at the FAO reference laboratory. Further confirmation is needed on those samples.

All the samples in which the results obtained from the Central Veterinary Laboratory do not match with the ones obtained at the FAO reference laboratory are under process for virus isolation.

To put pressure on the virus FAO recommends:

1. Increased surveillance through the CODAN radio network put in place by FAO in the Agriculture Departments in 32 provinces of Afghanistan.
2. Emergency response teams should be deployed and they should have all the necessary equipment (including vehicles) to visit the places, make investigations, collect samples, etc

FAO is actively involved in funding mobilization through the FAO’s Emergency Center for Transboundary Animal Disease (ECTAD). FAO is in the process of defining the activities that will be covered by the US$200 000 funds proposed to be used for Afghanistan, through a project funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This will be finalized in the upcoming days.
