Three new cases of H5 avian influenza found in Afghanistan
30.03.2006 Kabul, March 28 - Three new cases of the H5 type of bird flu have been found in Afghanistan. One case was detected in a chicken from Kandahar province, and the other two were from chickens found in the Baraki Barak district of Logar province.

The dead poultry were found on private farms and tested today by the UN Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) at its laboratory in Kabul. It was the first time that birds found in Kandahar and Logar provinces had tested positive for bird flu since the disease was first detected in Afghanistan in early March.

A total of 26 cases of the H5 strain of avian influenza have been found in seven provinces – six of these samples later tested positive for the H5N1 virus.

The FAO is continuing to test poultry and other birds collected in different provinces. Thus far in Afghanistan, avian influenza remains confined to the bird population, with no human cases reported. Nonetheless, it is imperative that the human population is protected.

The government has appointed a National Action Committee to coordinate further activities to control the disease. It is receiving expert advice from the Food & Agriculture Organization, the World Health Organization, the UN Children's Fund, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan and other UN agencies in Afghanistan.
