Afghan Heritage Night with Khaled Hosseini 05.02.2006 (Laguna Hills, CA) – The Afghanistan Relief Organization (ARO), a California-based humanitarian organization, honors best-selling author Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner, Friday, Feb. 24, in Laguna Hills, CA. Joining Hosseini at the humanitarian event is Days of Our Lives star, Alison Sweeney, as guest emcee.Afghan Heritage Night will feature live presentations of authentic Afghan music, a taste of delicious Afghan cuisine, and a silent auction of Afghan jewelry and art. Hosseini is being honored for sharing the Afghan experience and culture with his best-selling book, The Kite Runner, currently being adapted as a feature movie by DreamWorks. Sweeney, a popular actress and humanitarian, said she was "overwhelmed" by The Kite Runner and is lending her support for international aid. Featured musicians at Afghan Heritage Night include: Salar Nader Khan, Sekander Seraj, Fraidoon Aramesh, Mangal, Masoud Tawafi, Phillip Limina, and ARO volunteer, Chris Slattery, with Andrew Rossignol on acoustic guitar. The Afghan Heritage Night proceeds will allow ARO to distribute critical relief supplies to Afghanistan and help fund ARO's three-year-old educational center in Kabul. The Technology Education Center (TEC) now provides free education to approximately 800 girls and boys, as well as providing adult vocational programs to encourage self-sufficiency. The success of the TEC—which offers classes from morning to evening to meet demand—has created additional expenses for staffing, maintenance, and supplies. ARO was established in 1998 in California, and is a registered 501c3 non-governmental organization, relying primarily on volunteers and donations. The organization is secular and non political, with volunteers of all backgrounds and faiths. ARO recently received support from the British Embassy in Kabul, the European Union, and has previously worked with the US military on airlifting relief supplies. Volunteers currently are working on the next airlift of relief and school supplies. The programs and relief trips by American volunteers have been reported in Orange Coast Magazine, the Orange County Register, CNN, and The LA Weekly, among other publications. For more information about ARO, visit the website, www.afghanrelief.com. Do your part to aid international relief and experience a taste of Afghanistan at the Afghan Heritage Night, 7 p.m. until midnight, at the Pacific Hills Banquet & Catering event center, 23551 Moulton Parkway, Laguna Hills, CA.
