Taliban threaten pro Karzai Ulema
15.07.2005 Friday July 15, 2005, PESHAWAR: Leaflets, or Shabnamas (night letters), threatening death to Afghan Ulema supporting the government of President Hamid Karzai have been distributed in an Afghan refugees' camp in Nowshera district.

Apparently, pro Taliban militants have issued the leaflets. The leaflets
don't carry the name of any organization or individual. The leaflets were pasted at several places in the Afghan refugees' camp at Jallozai in Nowshera. The leaflets were first seen a few days ago. The Jallozai camp became known as the abode of Arab fighters during the days of the Afghan Jehad.

The message in the leaflets warned Afghan Ulema that they would be killed for serving in the Hamid Karzai government or offering it support. It argued that Ulema backing the US led coalition and the Karzai government were more dangerous than the foreign troops occupying Afghanistan because they mislead the Afghan people and provide justification to Afghans serving and supporting the present regime in Kabul.

Claiming that obscenity had spread far and wide in Afghanistan due to encouragement by the US and Afghan governments, the leaflets accused the pro Karzai Afghan Ulema of doing nothing to stem the rot. It also gave examples to show that young Afghan men and women were being corrupted through moral turpitude as part of a conspiracy to weaken their religious fervour and character.
