Tillman Center to open in Afghanistan 24.03.2005 Mar. 24, 2005 12:00 AM The United Service Organizations (USO) and the NFL will open the Pat Tillman USO Center in Afghanistan in the next week. The NFL donated $250,000 to the USO for the construction of the Tillman Center, located at Bagram Air Base near Kabul and named in honor of Tillman, the former Arizona State and Cardinals player who, as an Army Ranger, was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan in April 2004. Colleges Saint Mary's coach Randy Bennett plans to meet with Athletic Director Carl Clapp soon to work out a contract extension. Bennett led the Gaels to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 1997. . . . Frank Haith, who led Miami to 16 wins in his first season as basketball coach, signed a five-year contract. Terms of the deal weren't released, but when Haith was hired last year, he signed a five-year pact worth an estimated $350,000 annually. Miami went 16-13 this season and finished sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference - easily exceeding preseason expectations in the school's first year in the conference. Hockey Peter Forsberg will not play in the World Hockey Championships in Vienna because of injuries. Golf Padraig Harrington, the sixth-ranked golfer in the world, may skip next month's Masters tournament to spend time with his ailing father in Ireland. Boxing Lennox Lewis won another case against his one-time promoter, allowing the former heavyweight champion to sue Panos Eliades for rights to property in London. Lewis, who retired and gave up the title a year ago, had won a $5.5 million award in New York in 2002. Horse racing Congrats has drawn post seven for Saturday's $6 million Dubai (United Arab Emirates) World Cup. Congrats is trainer Richard Mandella's chance to defend the cup he won last year with Pleasantly Perfect, who also drew post seven. Swimming Olympic star Michael Phelps has entered seven events in the U.S. Trials for the World Swimming Championships in Montreal. The U.S. team will be selected April 1-6 at Indiana University. The world meet will be July 24-31. Auto racing Crew chiefs Chad Knaus and Alan Gustafson convinced NASCAR to reduce their two-week suspensions to 90 days probation. Knaus, who prepared the winning Chevrolet driven by Jimmie Johnson, still must pay a $35,000 fine, and his team and driver still lose 25 points. Gustafson, the crew chief of the Las Vegas runner-up No. 5 driven by Kyle Busch, also must pay his $25,000 fine, and his team's 25-point penalty also stands. Elsewhere Eleni Daniilidou beat Tathiana Garbin 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 at the Nasdaq-100 Open at Key Biscayne Open. Scottsdale's Meghann Shaughnessy also won.
