The Youth of Afghanistan Weep – is the World Listening?

Young adulthood is a period of great expectation. Having finally grown physically, the young adult has left child-hood behind and moved to the most critical time in the development of mind, body and sex; he or she begins to take responsibility in society and in his or her future, and can control his or her environment.
Afghanistan in particular is a very young country; based on available information, 45 per cent of Afghanistan’s population is aged 15 to 35.
This young generation of Afghanistan has faced and has tolerated considerable spiritual and physical damage in the past three decades of war.
These young people have been left behind by the caravan of education, development and all other affairs of life.
However, after the Bonn Agreement and the establishment of interim, transitional and electoral administrations, good and positive changes took place to improve the lives of young people. But in spite all these changes, they still are in a difficult situation and are faced by many problems and challenges today.
After Hamid Karzai became President of Afghanistan, he established the Ministry of Youth Affairs led by Amina Afzaly. Unfortunately, this ministry lost its independence when Parliament merged it with the Ministry of Information and Culture.
It bears mentioning, however, that the Ministry of Youth Affairs did not have the opportunity to do much for the Afghan youth, aside from establishing its own administration and personnel. Currently, the suffering and oppressed youths of the country define their problems and challenges in a number of fields, of which I will mention a few.

1-Education problems
The lack of educational opportunities is a big problem of youths today, which grows worse day by day. For instance, although every year the number of students taking university entrance examinations increases, for instance the Ministry of Higher Education only accepts 12,000 students from 60,000 applicants.
There is no good strategy and policy to select and attract the best students in the universities managed by the Ministry of Higher Education. When these students have graduated from the university, opportunities to engage in meaningful work are extremely limited.
Most of the youths who lack a head of the family who can provide sufficient income are forced to work to support their families and are therefore unable to pursue an education.

2-Violation
One of the other problem that youth are faced with that, it is violation against youths.
Many youths are under the violation in Afghan society, for instance.
Compulsory marriages:
As we know, marriage is a mutually agreed-upon commitment of lifelong partnership. When the wishes of a man and a woman are not considered in marriage and they are forced to marry to satisfy family wishes, this compulsory marriage lead to unpleasant consequences.
Different types of compulsory marriages are seen in our society now; for instance, invisible marriages, traditional marriages, marriages with advanced conditions, and marriages with dowries, exchanging women to resolving quarrels, childhood engagement, or marrying a widow without her consent and agreement. Compulsory marriages often result in divorce, murder, worry and anguish, adultery, mental agitation, running away, beatings, family problems and poor child raising.
Honorable families should give this issue serious attention; otherwise it will lead to problems in families and society or much worse results. Not only is it difficult to compensate for the disadvantages listed, it is patently unfair and unkind, and violates the rights of the affected boys and girls.
The other negative aspect of compulsory marriages and their negative effects on the younger generation and on the future of Afghanistan is the culturally-driven and selfish practice of hosting excessively ostentatious and expensive weddings. This practice is often driven by superstition, and to some extent perpetuated by low literacy and ignorance. For instance most of the daughter’s family asks the boy to buy a lot of gold, this leads that other families do the same as these and it states jealousy and useless suggestions.
The lavish engagements and weddings discourage interest in weddings among the youth sector, and have contributed to an increase in the number of single women.
An honest appraisal of this practice will reveal that all of these superstitions and useless expenditure of money do not have any profits; it only shows childhood ostentatious and shortage of idea.
We should accept that there are very few in our society that realistically have the means to organize such lavish engagement and wedding ceremonies; but this is not well-understood or accepted. It is the need for competition, and jealousy that causes many to spend money well beyond their means, ultimately resulting in hardship and worry for the hosting family, as well as putting them into debt.
Honorable families should refrain from drowning their young people and instead should concentrate on helping them cross the bridge to success. The holy Islamic religion has not enacted such lavish practices and ostentatious display of material wealth.
Instead Islam places importance on good morals, behavior, character, mutual agreement of potential wedding partners, good intentions, and mutual acceptance of partners in their views and spiritualities.
It should be clear from the abovementioned explanations that every kind of material expenses and splendid parties are overly materialistic, out of conscience and a departure from the generosity and nobility of humanity. Therefore, honorable families should choose a good and acceptable way by inviting 100 to 200 close friends instead of 1000 spectators, and focus on creating a pleasant and beautiful wedding party with passion, emotion, interest, happiness and pure love.
They should think about their futures, and let it not remain unsaid that it is even possible to celebrate such a union and relationship with nothing more than a marriage contract.

3-Addiction problems
The other problem that Afghan youths have is narcotics.
This is also the result of families' carelessness, poverty, inactivity, illiteracy or family problems that plague the youths of our country in the dangerous web of addiction and it drives their futures and that of their society and country to destruction.

4- Forced discrimination among families.
One of the other problems in Afghan society is that of language, tribal and regional discrimination. This is one of the worst factors in driving Afghanistan to adversity, and it divides and creates disunity among youths,
Unfortunately many families cling to this practice with zeal as a matter of honor.
Thus, it is necessary for each and every Afghan to reject these tricks and deceptions, useless ideas, like cancerous glands from their life and instead, nurture and grow the ideas of peace, love, kindness, friendship and brotherhood.

5-HIV (Aids) disease
Another potentially fatal phenomenon that threatens all of society and especially the young is the disease AIDS. Most young people afflicted with this disease are so as a result of carelessness, ignorance as to the means by which this disease is transmitted, and its general nature.
Thus it is essential that responsible agencies, media, and all people help inform each other via publications and educational laws to help publicize the nature of this disease and how it can be prevented.

6-Ideas from the movie and selfishness of the youths
Another area plaguing today’s youth is the watching of house burning movies that are extremely foreign to Afghan culture. Today some of these movies fill the heads of our dear young people with strange ideas and encourage them to waste their precious time chasing movies not related to our culture and traditions or other time-wasting activities instead of more productive activities such as pursuing their educations, attending university or engaging in physical activity or sport.
This phenomenon takes youths under the spell of romantic or unrealistic stories
Therefore, honorable s, leading to lack of productivity, illiteracy, perverted ideas and being single, and ultimately failure.
The above mentioned subject takes the youths under the affects of romantic, artificial stories and leads to retardation, illiteracy, perversion and being single, and failure cavity.
Therefore it is necessary that our youths step carefully, and instead of seeking quick riches, material wealth, or “this-worldly” happiness, focus instead on the richness of their culture, on self improvement, and on steadily working to take their country from darkness, ignorance, and foolishness to a bright future and a life of honor and glory.

7- Gambling
Yet another disease afflicting today’s Afghan youth is gambling. This disease also results from the lack of education, poverty and the failure to provide opportunities for education and entertainment. Some families either fail to pay proper attention to providing a good education for their children in childhood, or cannot afford to properly care for or pay attention to them
Some children focus their attention to playing games like marbles, immoral activities, begging and robbery. Gradually, as they grow up, they turn to bigger activities like gambling. If they win in gambling they may turn to narcotics, wine, or other immoral activity. If they lose, however, they are often forced to sell property, items from the home, their home itself, land, and finally they may resort to robbery and theft of others’ property or the stores of others.
And in the end, stealing chickens turns into stealing camels; and playing marbles turns into winning or losing houses. families and those responsible should focus on properly educating their children and giving serious attention to the solutions of education, and to teach them to avoid youths who are plagued with this problem, in order to rescue Afghan society and youth from this disease.

8- The crisis of poverty and inactivity among the youths
The last of the social, cultural and economical phenomena that our youths are faced with is poverty.
Today the majority of our country’s youths suffer from the lack of sufficient and proper food, health care, living space, educational opportunities and also from lack of employment opportunities in order to ensure basic necessities for themselves and for their families.
In ourcountry most of the youths are the heads of their families today, which means that the majority provide for the basic necessities of their families by doing summer work, to avoid starving. They sacrifice their youth times to provide a few mouthfuls of bread so that they and their families can live, and are deprived of literacy.
This leads society to ruin, and the youths to be in sacrifice their vigor, ability, initiatives and creativity in the service of others, either for free or for a bit of bread for their stomachs to avoid starving. Worse, it may lead youths to join the ranks of the insurgency, organized narcotics, smugglers, kidnapping, terror, bribery and corrupt groups.
In my opinion, one possible solution that can contribute to better employment opportunities and solve the problem of inactivity among youths is an economically-oriented education program for youths and adults.
The government should maintain its equilibrium with people, youths and the economy, as Newton says Thus we can say if the government loses its equilibrium it will also lead to disaster.
In any case, it will be better for youths, adults, honorable families and those in positions of responsibility to wake up the sleep of neglect and take responsibility for them and for society, to think about determination of their futures. We must rescue ourselves from ignorance, carelessness, ridiculous beliefs or superstition, short-sightedness and useless ideas. We should give attention and care to consolidating our good ideas, understanding, education, development and the progress of peaceful coexistence, stability, friendship, brotherhood, helping each other, and finally, to give thought to the future makers of the country.
