"Bani Israel" ?

Dear Friends,

My name is Moses Shohet and I am interested in Pashtun history.

Recently I have heard and read some articles that the Pashtun tribes in Afghanistan relate themselves to the lost tribes of Israel.  I just wanted to know a "from the field" witness of Pashtun people, are there any real traditions that support this claim from your own personal experiences?

A Friend,

Moses Shohet.

Salam & Thanks

Here are some examples of the traditions I read the Pashtuns are accustomed with (in some variation or another):

1) The male-born children are circumcised at the 8th. day of their birth

2) The Pashtuns have a traditional shirt that has four corners, two at the front of the shirt and two at the back

3) They will not have intercourse while the wife is in her period.  And after the period is over, the wife will go and immerse in a river or a pond for purification

4) The women in Pashtun families light two candles as the evening of friday falls, upon entry to the seventh day of the week (saturday)

5) In honour of saturday, the women bake special bread

6) The Pashtuns will only eat meat from what their own people have slaughtered, not by anyone else

7) The star of David, which is a symbol of two triangles layed one upon the other, as one of them is turned upside-down, is a very common symbol among the Pashtuns

8) The Pashtuns believe they are descendants of the 10 lost tribes of Israel, that were exiled from the land of Israel and brought to their current location by the Assyrians some 2,500 years ago.

If any of the above-mentioned traditions are familiar with you as first-hand.  Please comment on them.  Iwould really like to know if any of them are still practiced nowadays.

Your Friend,

Moses Shohet

Dear Friends,

Furthermore, I would like to invite any of you Pashtun people who have heard similar traditions from elder family members or relatives, to comment on the subject.

 Peace be upon you,

Moses Shohet.
